What causes a light switch to stop working but light stays on?

A light that stays on while the switch “does nothing” usually means the switch failed in the ON position or the circuit is miswired. A stuck or worn internal switch contact, a shorted switch loop, or a three-way switch wired incorrectly can all cause this. Smart switches can also fail and leave the load on. If you notice dark spots or a burning odor at the faceplate, stop and call a licensed electrician.

Quick checks:

  • Flip the switch fully on/off.
  • Check the bulb.
  • Inspect plug/cord (for lamps).
  • Examine the faceplate for dark spots or odors.
  • Reset the circuit breaker.
